“Drinking from shoes” or “shoey” is a cultural practice performed by Australians to celebrate the victory. In this ritual, people drink any form of alcohol straight out of a shoe. It has been performed openly by many prominent personalities, and their fans have also copied them. In 2016, Jack Miller, an Australian MotoGP rider celebrated his first ever premier class victory by drinking champagne out of his own shoe and then another Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo also did the same to celebrate one of his victories.

Andrew Tye, who was the highest wicket-taker in IPL 2018, is a self-confessed Formula One fan and has promised to carry forward the culture of drinking champagne in a shoe if his IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab wins their first ever title this year. He told the team in an interview on the official portal.

“I’ll probably look into it (shoey) at some point”. The act (shoey) involves pouring champagne in a shoe, coming right out of the foot, and drinking it bottoms up. I am a bit of a Formula 1 fan,” Tye was quoted as saying on KXIP.in. “Bit of a motorsport fan in general. Back when I was younger, my dad and I used to sit down and watch some car races on a Sunday afternoon. And then there’s Daniel Ricciardo being a Perth boy, where I’m from….”

The shoe is tilted before alcohol is poured

Drinking beer out of shoes may sound like a disgusting habit, but over the years, it has become very common. The shoe is tilted a bit after which the drinker pours champagne into the shoe opening and then drinks from the same place.

Punjab won their first game of the season against Rajasthan Royals but lost the second one to Kolkata Knight Riders due to some very expensive spells, especially from skipper Ravichandran Ashwin.
