Australia’s troubles in the absence of Steve Smith and David Warner intensified in their own backyard in the four-match series against India. The visitors, for the first time Down Under, won a Test series by defeating the hosts 2-1. There were some thrilling performances from both teams throughout the four Tests. However, it was the Indians who managed to hold their nerves in tough situations and thus emerged triumphant.
While there were some scintillating performances on display, few players ended up being massive disappointments. They weren’t able to live up to the expectations and thus let their teams down in crunch times. With a string of low scores and disappointing spells, these cricketers could be axed from the Test squad for the upcoming games this year.
Here are five players who might face the axe after the Australia vs India Test series:
1. Murali Vijay
Murali Vijay is already 34-years-old. He was one of the strongest pillars of the Indian team for a few years especially when they toured overseas. However, Vijay has struggled with his form of late. The opener was dropped from the side after the England series. But, he made a comeback with some good county performances.
A good outing in the practice game and an unfortunate injury to Prithvi Shaw helped him being picked in the XI for the first two Tests. However, he only managed to register scores of 11, 18, 0, 20 in four innings. Eventually, he was dropped for the last two games of the series. With youngsters like Shaw, Mayank Agarwal and even Shubman Gill emerging onto the scenes, it won’t be easy for Vijay to make it into the Test team.
