Until yesterday, everything was going nice and smooth for the Bangladesh cricket team on their tour of New Zealand. The Tigers only had one Test match remaining, scheduled to start tomorrow at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. However, this morning turned out to be equivalent to a horrific dream for them courtesy of a terror attack in the Christchurch city that took the lives of many.
A gunman entered the mosque and started firing, leaving the people inside the holy place shell-shocked. The video of the horrendous act was also live-streamed on the social media. The Bangladesh players also went to the mosque in order for their Friday prayers, however, luckily they didn’t enter the place where the shambolic attack took place, realising the gravity of the scenario.
A shameful occurring in New Zealand
Later the official Twitter handle of the Black Caps revealed that the Tigers’ cricketers went back to their hotel safely. Moreover, it was also announced the last game of the Test series was also cancelled, bearing in mind the safety of the cricketers. They laid on the floor of the team bus for quite some time before being escorted by the New Zealand police to the Hagley Oval where they were locked inside the dressing room.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern termed it one of New Zealand’s darkest days and the comments didn’t spring a surprise. Khaled Mashud, the Bangladesh team manager, said that the team escaped death by a mere four minutes. After the incident, the cricketing fraternity expressed its grief over the matter. Shakib Al Hasan, who isn’t with the team, also shared a tweet.
In the meantime, the occurring was condemned by many, including Rohit Sharma, the Indian batsman, who questioned humanity after the incident. Rohit took to Twitter and wrote, “Heartbreaking news coming out from New Zealand. What’s happened to humanity?,”
