At one point in time, Australia were in a commanding position in the first Test at the iconic Adelaide Oval, having picked up some quick Indian wickets. However, Cheteshwar Pujara scored a century and got his team out of jail. Nevertheless, the Aussies, in their first innings, have taken a rather bizarre route and are currently trailing by 59 runs with three wickets in hand.

Hosts way too defensive

After ending the day at 250/9, India couldn’t add further to their overnight score as Josh Hazlewood nipped out Mohammad Shami. Australia didn’t get off to an auspicious start by any means as fast bowler Ishant Sharma rattled Aaron Finch’s woodwork in the very first over and sent him packing for a duck. Usman Khawaja joined debutant Marcus Harris in the middle.

The duo put their heads down and built a patient stand of 45 runs from 124 balls. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Harris for 26 to break the stand. Shaun Marsh became Ashwin’s second victim. Thereafter, Peter Handscomb and Khawaja tried to resurrect the innings, but the offie got rid of the latter, who pained to 28 runs from 125 deliveries with one four.

India tighten the screws

Handscomb fell prey to Jasprit Bumrah after scoring 34 runs from 93 balls with five boundaries. Skipper Tim Paine couldn’t survive the venom spewed by the Indian bowlers and he could score five before Ishant removed him. Pat Cummins tried his heart out to show some resistance, but Bumrah trapped him plumb in front to pick up the seventh Australian wicket.

At the other end, Travis Head seemed to be pretty much at ease as he scored 61 runs from 149 balls with six boundaries. The Indian bowlers stuck to the basics and made sure that the Aussies weren’t allowed to get away. Even as Ashwin got three wickets, Ishant and Bumrah picked up a couple each. Head along with Mitchell Starc stayed not out at the day’s end.
