Khulna Titans’ campaign in this Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) went from bad to worse as they lost their third match in a row. The team, captained by Mahmudullah, lost by seven wickets against Rajshahi Kings at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and are currently languishing at the bottom of the points table. The Kings, on the contrary, won their first match after the defeat against Dhaka Dynamites.

Titans’ batting stumbles

Electing to bat first after winning the toss backfired on the Titans as they were restricted for a paltry 117 runs in 20 overs. Paul Stirling and Junaid Siddique got them off to a decent start with a partnership of 40 runs from 29 balls. The duo was separated by left-armer Mustafizur Rahman, who got rid of Stirling, who scored 16 with one four and a six. In the next over, Isuru Udana removed the ominous-looking Siddique.

The left-hander notched 23 runs from 18 deliveries. Thereafter, the Titans could only score 77 runs in the next 87 balls as wickets went down at regular intervals. Dawid Malan promised with 22 from 18 balls, but he fell prey to Soumya Sarkar. Udana was the Kings’ most successful bowler with three wickets. Mustafizur got a couple even as Arafat Sunny, Qais Ahmed, Sarkar got rid of one batsman each.

Mominul and Mehidy complete formalities

The experienced Mohammad Hafeez and Mominul Haque opened the batting with a modest target ahead of them. Nevertheless, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam accounted for Hafeez’s prized wicket in the second over to reignite the Titans’ hopes of a comeback. Skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz promoted himself up the order and batted at number three ahead of Sarkar and showed enough maturity with the willow.

The 21-year-old went on to score a half-century in 43 balls with six boundaries and a six. Mominul threw his wicket away to off-spinner Stirling after scoring a well-compiled 44 from 43 balls with four boundaries. It also broke an 89-run stand between the duo. Soumya Sarkar came in thereafter, but by then the match was all over bar the shouting. The Kings chased the target down with seven balls to spare.
